New Technology File System (NTFS)

New Technology File System (NTFS) can identify as a standard file system of Windows NT, including its later versions Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. So we can define that New Technology File System (NTFS) supersedes the File allocated table (FAT) file system as the preferred file system for Microsoft's Windows operating systems
The New Technology File System (NTFS) uses a MFT (Master File Table) to locate all files within an New Technology File System(NTFS) volume. Also it has several improvements over FAT and HPFS (High Performance File System) such as improved support for metadata and the use of advanced data structures to improve performance, reliability, and disk space utilization including additional extensions such as security access control lists (ACL) and file system journaling.

There are number of benefits of New Technology File System(NTFS) such as,
  • Built-in data compression.
  • Use of log file for transactions
  • Clear determinations of users with the domain
  • Ability to deal with large capacity (up to 246 GB) storage units.
  • Support for names based on Unicode
  • Data security on both removable and fixed disks
  • Support for long file names as well as "8 by 3" names
  • Use of a b-tree directory scheme to keep track of file clusters

Why New Technology File System (NTFS) is important?

When we go through the New Technology File System (NTFS) , we can identify that it
allows to gain the maximum benefits for the needs of today's enterprise business environments by increasing security by robust and reliable performance, as well as a design for greater storage growth. Here it provides security enhancements in the form of Access Control Lists (ACL)s for files and directories while providing multiple levels of access permissions.

In the same time we can identify that NTFS supports active directory. Active Directory allows the system to join a domain and uses server-based authorization to establish file permissions. Also the NTFS providesthe ability to encrypt specific files and directories. In the same time we can identify that NTFS consist with built in data compression and also it use of log file for transactions. It supoort for name based on unicode and it has a good ability to deal with large capacity storage units. While concerning all these things we can say that New Technology File System(NTFS) is important
