What are transferable skills?

Everyone in this world has skills. So there are something that everyone has. That's why we can say in reality, we all have skills. All of us have number of them. Normally we can define skill as an ability to do something. As people we all have "learned" abilities and "natural" abilities. Normally learned abilities are our skills and natural abilities are our talents. Skills can define as abilities that have gained from practice and knowledge.

Without ever having a job or without ever having been trained for a job, every person is qualified to perform literally hundreds of types of jobs. Because, skills gained not only from volunteer work. It also gains from hobbies, education and other life experiences. The skills that a person develops throughout the life journey can apply to a variety of situations. There are different types of skills. Among those skills transferable skills plays a main part.

Transferable skills can be defined as an ability learnt in one context which can be applied in another. These skills and abilities have acquired during any activity in your life, your jobs, classes, projects, volunteer work, sports, parenting, hobbies, virtually anything that are applicable to what you want to do in your next job. That's why we can say most transferable skills are gained through experience. Once you have them you can't lose them, you just keep building on them.

Transferable skills are also called Soft Skills. These skills are used in a variety of jobs or situations which can transfer them from one job to another. No matter which positions you have held in the past. So that's why it can define as a portable skill that you deliberately
take with you to other life experiences. So transferable skills are like building blocks from which you can develop many more skills. Normally transferable skills can be divided into three subsets such as,

  • working with people
  • working with things
  • working with information and data

These skills are so valuable. Because, these skills can be used in such a wide array of work settings.
In addition to being useful to career changers, transferable skills are also important to those who are facing a layoff, new graduates and to those re-entering the workforce after an extended absence. As the great thing about transferable skills we can mention it make adaptable. Good transferable skills are really helpful to develop and add to the strengths and character of a person. While make the person more adaptable and prepare them for the work force, society in general.
